Obituary for Valerie Ann Burrowes

Print
Valerie Ann Hitchcock Burrowes
August 7, 1937 – October 15, 2016

Valerie (“Val”)was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Richard and Helen Hitchcock (Theiss). They moved to California in the early 1940’s and resided in Santa Monica. Valerie graduated from Santa Monica High School – class of 1955.
She married James Henry Burrowes in 1955. They eventually settled in El Segundo, CA where they raised their 2 children. Val and her family were long time members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Inglewood, CA where Val was involved in a variety of activities, including working for a time as the church secretary.
In the mid 70’s Val was elected to the part-time position as City Clerk for the City of El Segundo. She truly enjoyed what would eventually become a full-time career in municipal government.
From El Segundo, Val and Jim moved to Yuma, AZ where she was the appointed full-time City Clerk for 2 years. Following her position in Yuma, Val and Jim relocated to Moreno Valley, CA where she was the City Clerk for the newly incorporated City of Moreno Valley.
Val’s ultimate career move was to be the City Clerk for the City of Sacramento. She enjoyed her work and was thrilled to be the City Clerk in the State capital. Val would have continued working had it not been for Jim’s health issues. They retired and moved back to Moreno Valley where Val enjoyed a variety of volunteer activities including serving on the board for both her mobile home community of Il Sorrento and the Moreno Valley Senior Citizen center.
Val was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Helen Hitchcock and her sister Judith Jo Hitchcock Williams. To the end of Val’s life, she grieved the loss of her husband Jim, who passed away in 2005.
Val is survived by her daughter Kim (Phil) and grandson Patrick, son James Richard (Gloria), and grandchildren Richard (Ashley), Brian, and Megan, niece Cari Utnehmer, nephew Brad Horn and niece Brenda Braggia.
In addition, she is survived by the 2 little bright stars in her life, great granddaughters Isabelle and Arielle.
Val will be remembered by a multitude of friends from so many walks of life. She left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
The family would like to thank the nurses and physicians at Corona Regional Medical Center for the care they gave Val at the end of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://www.alz.org in memory of her husband Jim.
