Joseph Robert Summers Jr.
Joseph R. Summers Jr. (Bob) passed peacefully in his sleep from this earth on May 12th in Riverside, CA at the age of 84.
Bob is survived by his wife Patricia Summers; Sister Linda Fulton; children Cheryl Arasim, and Joseph Summers; Grandchildren; Lauren Arasim, Sean Summers, Paul Summers, and Aiden Summers; Son-in-law Mike Arasim; Daughter-in-law Candi Pettibon.
Joseph R. Summers Jr. was born on October 29th, 1933 in Kansas City, MO to Ruth and Joseph Summers. He graduated from Southeast High School in Kansas City, MO in 1953. He attended some college before proudly serving in the US Navy as a Seabee from 1957-1961. He was assigned to Construction Battalion Three in the Philippines as a Builder Petty Officer 2nd Class, and received the good conduct award, and National Defense Service Medal before his honorable discharge in 1961. He met his soon to be wife on a blind date in California, and it was history from there, and married Patricia A. Morris in 1956. After the Navy Bob served on the Kansas City Fire Department for a time, and then moved to San Bernardino, CA where he worked at Santa Fe Railroad for ten years as a carpenter and bridge builder. He then moved to Riverside with his family to work for the California School for the Deaf as a carpenter and locksmith where he then retired.
Bob was an accomplished carpenter, and dedicated a lot of time in his retirement to Habitat for Humanity. His team built many houses in the Hemet and San Jacinto area for families in need. He was generous, and loved helping at the First Presbyterian Church in Hemet, and neighbors alike. Both Bob and Pat loved to camp in their RV’s, and had been members of camping clubs like Good Sam, and the Traveliers since the 70’s. Going monthly to outings all over Southern California, and various treks back to the midwest. He loved to laugh; he was so very kind, generous, caring, and loving; he loved music, nature, and the outdoors; and he was so very proud of his kids and grandkids.
Services are scheduled for 3PM on May 20th at Miller-Jones Mortuary in Perris, CA. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bob's life.
The family would like to thank the staff both at Welbrook Arlington and Ascend Hospice for their dedication, and allowing our father comfort and dignity during his last days with us.
