Life Story for Doris Marie Reid

Doris Marie James was born in Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, October 4, 1933, to Henry and Anzie James. Doris had an older brother name Henry and a twin sister name Dorothy, who is older by 10 minutes, much to the surprise of their mother who thought up until the very end of the pregnancy that she was carrying one child. As the youngest child and the younger of twin, Doris was quieter of the two but was very observant, with her sister Dorothy, as the ring leader. They were always together. Where you saw one, you saw the other.

Mommy went to Hooper Ave Elementary and 92nd Street School. During her middle school years, she went to Jordan Downs middle school. In 1947, the James family became Seventh Day Adventist and joined the Wadsworth Church in Compton, CA. In the second half of her 8th grade, her parents enrolled both her and Dorothy in the Los Angeles Academy, where she made many lifetime friends. At LA Academy, she excelled in her classwork, not having to study too hard.

In 1952, Doris and Dorothy graduated from LA Academy and attended Pacific Union College (PUC) where they both were admitted into the Pre-Nursing program. Doris finished her LVN program at East Los Angeles College. Upon graduation, she worked at Los Angeles County General hospital for approximately 20 years and later as a cosmetologist.

While attending a school social, Doris met the love of her life, Walter J. Reid, Sr. After a few years of dating, they got married on July 6, 1958. Walter and Doris eventually joined the University Church and raised two children, Yvette M. Gholar and Walter J. Reid, Jr. They enjoyed socializing and were apart of a group called the Y-MARCS (Young Married Couples Club), where they traveled, raised funds for scholarships and fellowshipped with other Seventh Day Adventists where they went.

In 2003, they decided that a slower pace would do them some good, so they moved to Apple Valley and joined the High Desert Church where Doris served as deaconess with perfection.

On November 21, 2018, after a relatively short illness, Doris went to sleep. She is proceeded in death by her parents (Henry and Anzie); husband (Walter Sr.); brother (Henry James); and brother-in-law (Ronald Baker). She leaves behind to cherish her memories, two children: Yvette Gholar (Gary) and Walter Reid, Jr. (Norvetta). Sister, Dorothy Baker. Sister-in-Law, Janie James. seven grandchildren: Brandon O’Neal, Cameron Reid, Teaira Chisolm, Christopher Williams, Londyn Reid, Kesli Reid, Zhi’rae Reid. Three great-granddaughters: Briel O’Neal, Jaimey Langford and Amilyah O’Neal. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many friends.
