In Loving Memory
Mary Ruth Wakefield Crowley
In the hills of Northern Alabama (Nauvoo), Mary Ruth Wakefield was born on November 25th 1924. She was the first daughter to Tom and Rosa and the 5th child. She had 8 more brothers and sisters, a baker’s dozen. In 1940, she met Clarence Crowley, a soldier home on leave. They were married on October 4th, 1941, just two months before the beginning of WWII. She traveled, by train, accompanying Clarence to the many Army bases where he trained soldiers for the field. She returned to Alabama, to have her first child, Sonny, in 1943. Dennis was born in 1945 when Clarence left the army, and they began their life together in Alabama. Theresa was born in 1947 and, in 1954, little sister, Velda was born. In 1957, Clarence made the decision to move the family to California. They established their home in California where Mary Ruth and Clarence would raise their children and see them grow. They loved to see their grandchildren, Corina, Dennis Michael, Dianna, Mary Jo, Robby, Cari Anne, Kendra and Vanessa play together. Mary Ruth and Clarence made many trips to see their children and grandchildren when some of them moved to Arkansas. Many trips were also made to Alabama, where they would reminisce with Mary Ruth’s brothers and sisters, Audrey, Leo, Bruce, T.J., James, Tommie, Christine, Dee Bart, Kenneth, Julia, Owen, and Connie.
Mary Ruth was the best cook and could make the best cobblers, biscuits, and “something out of nothing”. She had the knack. She took care of so many friends and neighbors in her life. From the time she was 12 years old, for instance, she put up 50 quarts of green beans for a sick neighbors. She fed strangers, because, just like she said, “You never know when you might be entertaining angels”. She was dismissed early from school to make pies (like only she could make) for the fall harvest. In 1990, Mary Ruth and Clarence moved to Sun City, where they enjoyed their retirement years. In 1999, Mary Ruth lost Clarence after 58 years of marriage. Soon after, when Mama broke her hip, her son Dennis moved to Sun City to help. We know Mama would want to us to mention how Dennis unselfishly dedicated his life for her great care, making sure she had everything she needed. We will always be grateful for his dedication to our mother. Mary Ruth was “a blessing to anyone her life touched”, a precious friend once told us. How true this was and what a light she was to any who knew her! She was blessed with 13 great grandchildren, Cori, Laci, Eric, Samantha, Corina, Jessica, Jayme, Elliott, Max, Gunnar, Hunter, Ryder and Stryker. Then came the great-great grandchildren, Claire, Cade, Lexxon, Layton, Aubrey, Noah, Alexis, Khalessi, and Jayden. What a legacy she has left, we’ll see you again one day Mamma. Love you forever! Always in our hearts!
