Raymond Michael Fiscus passed away at the age of 94 at his home in La Habra, California on Monday, November 5, 2018. Ray was born and raised in Dover, Ohio on August 7, 1924, the second child of Raymond J. and Agnes M. (Fenstermaker) Fiscus. He graduated from St. Joseph School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in March, 1943, where he proudly served his country for two and a half years.
Upon Ray’s return to the States, he wasted no time in proposing to his childhood sweetheart, Gloria M. Hiller. They were married on November 28, 1945. Ray and Gloria moved to Southern California in 1948, purchased their first home on Alpine Street in La Habra, and started a family. Their union spanned almost seventy-three years and produced four children, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
In 1985, Ray retired from his position as a building inspector for the City of La Habra. He and Gloria moved to the San Jacinto/Hemet area where they lived for several years. They especially enjoyed traveling with friends. Ray loved basketball and joined the community gym, where he would shoot baskets with other men his age three to four times a week. All that practice paid off when he sank more three-point shots than other competitors, all of whom were younger, in the Gillette NCCA 3-Point Challenge. That earned him a trip to the 1993 NCCA Final Four Championships in New Orleans.
Ray will be remembered for his wit (he was always ready with a “dad joke”), his kindness, his love of the Lord and family, and most of all his unwavering love of his bride, Gloria. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rita and her husband Vince Hartz, nephew John and his wife Beth Hartz, and nephew Charlie Hartz.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria; children Kathy (Kenny) Ono, Becky (Mike Cremisino) Clawson, Mike (Regina) Fiscus and Steve Fiscus; grandchildren Crystal, Taylor, Nicole, Shawna, Nathan, Owen, and Riley; great-grandchildren Keira, Ethan, and Scarlett; nieces Barbara Hartz and Susan Brodeur; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St. Norbert’s Catholic Church in Orange, CA on Wednesday, December 19 at 11:00 a.m.
